According to family lore: "Peter and Franziska Bauer and the younger children were still living in the farm house in Höhenrain (Bavaria) when a major tragedy struck the family. A gun had been readied for a New Year's welcoming shot, (before fireworks were available, many Europeans practiced the tradition of firing guns into the air to celebrate the arrival of the New Year). Somehow little daughter Theresa, then some five years of age, found the gun. It went off and she was fatally wounded."
