Alexander Davis enlisted in March of 1864 as a Private in Co. K, 5th Massachusetts (Colored) Cavalry. He was discharged in October of 1865. The Civil War Soldiers Records & Profiles file from Ancestry lists his birth year as about 1841.

An 1893 admittance record from the soldier's home at Leavenworth, Kansas, records his age as 48 and his birth in Ohio. He was a widower, a resident of Platt City, Missouri. His nearest relative was recorded as Charley Davis of Platt City, Missouri. He was discharged and readmitted several times. It is also possible that he was the same Alexander Davis who enlisted earlier at Boston, Massachusetts.

His death date is recorded in the above record as October 6, 1901. Three separate burial register records for the Leavenworth National Cemetery also record his name and service in Co. K, 5th Massachusetts Colored Cavalry, and also his death date at the hospital for the soldier's home. He died at 2:00 am on October 6, 1901 and was buried at 8:30 am on October 7, 1901. One of these records lists his age as 65.
