Settled in Scriba in 1807.

In 1816 he was noted as picking up hundreds of cannonballs in the area of Fort Ontario, where they had been fired by the British in 1814, and sold them to the US Foundry at Onondaga. Money was scarce, people were healthy, so to supplement his income he collected cannonballs.

Dr. Deotatus Clarke
The second physician. Dr. Deotatus Clarke (7/21/1782 -- 6/10/47) came to Oswego in 1807. His father, Dr. John Clarke, a physician, had four sons who also were physicians. Dr. Deodatus Clarke moved from Connecticut early to New York State, practiced first at Cambridge (then Clinton, Oneida County), and afterwards at Pompey Hills, and
Manlius, Onondaga County. Edwin W. Clarke related how his father moved from Pompey in June 1807. His father bought 77 acres of land, being the eastern part of Lot No. 11 of Hamilton Core, Township No. 17 of Scriba's Patent lying one and three-fourths miles from the river and now being in the City of Oswego, on the city line.

He brought his family down in a batteau or salt boat from Salt Point. The family resided in Peter Sharpe's tavern while his father was erecting his habitation upon the land he purchased. The following June he brought the rest of his family to Oswego.
