THE LATE EDWIN W. CLARKE.
Elsewhere to-day we publish from the columns of the Boston Daily Advertiser a very just tribute to the life and character of the late Edwin W. Clarke who recently died in this city.
We have always felt that justice has not been done, by the way of memorial, in the case of one who had been so prominent in the early history of Oswego, and especially a gentleman of such unquestioned ability, upright character and model citizenship, and who had filled so important a place in one of the greatest political and moral movements the civilized world has ever known, and which has had suoh an important influence upon the institutions of this country. We therefore welcome to our columns the article from the Advertiser. It is from the pen of one who must have known Mr. Clarke well, but it is none too eulogistic of the traits and life work of that eminent citizen of Oswego. We say eminent because every man who contributed largely to the work of giving freedom to five millions of human beings, and assisted in changing this great republic from a land of slaves to a land of freemen, is eminent among his country men, and in that great work, Edwin W. Clarke had a very important part.
