Alton Fairchild, age 96, passed away of natural causes on Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at his home in Albion, Idaho.

He was born, one of twin boys, on July 7, 1910, in Oakley (the Basin), Idaho, the son of John Harvey and Louisiana McIntosh Fairchild.

He attended school in the Basin and graduated from Oakley High School. He then attended Albion State Normal School, graduating with his teaching certificate. He later received bachelor and master degrees from the University of Idaho.

He was a lifelong secondary school teacher, but his lifelong passion was coaching. He coached all sports but was especially fond of football, basketball and baseball. He took teams to state championship competitions with each of these sports during his coaching career.

He married Lucinda M. Sweet on Oct. 2, 1937, in Elko, Nevada. Following their marriage, they lived and taught in Idaho and Oregon. In 1993, they retired to Albion to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren.

Alton is survived by his daughter, Dr. Vicki Macy of Salt Lake City, Utah; and three grandchildren, Trevor Macy of Santa Monica, California, Darbi Macy-Delfiner of Bellevue, Washington, and Caitlin Macy of Salt Lake City, Utah.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lucy, who died on Jan. 24, 2002; four sisters; and seven brothers.
