"Pearl" was the oldest child of Thaddeus Meyer Carson and Mary Nancy "Nannie" Hay.

The family moved from Kentucky to Obion County, Tennessee when Pearl was very young. After the turn of the century, the Carsons moved to Missouri for a short time before settling in East St. Louis, St. Clair County, Illinois. Thad worked there for a street car company. He died in late 1905 or early 1906.

Pearl married a Canadian named George Robert Arnold on 10 Dec 1907 in St. Louis, Missouri. The Arnolds were the biological parents of 1 son, whom neither of them raised. Their marriage ended in divorce.

Children from first marriage: 1 son.

Pearl married Joseph Pias Harr on 14 Aug 1915 in East St. Louis. Pearl appeared in court in St. Clair County on 07 Sep 1916 on child abandonment charges involving her son from her first marriage. The boy was placed in an orphanage on 25 Sep 1916 after he was abandoned again.

Joseph filed for divorce in December of 1916 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. At that time, he told the court that Pearl had left him after 15 days of marriage. He said that he had attempted to reconcile with her, but that she had refused and would not explain her reasons. The divorce became final in March of 1917. He married Martha Dora Morrison on 01 Mar 1917 in Scott County, Missouri.

Children from second marriage: None known.

Pearl married Frank "Homer" Massey on 03 Jan 1918 in East St. Louis. He gave his occupation as a chauffeur at that time and was employed in that capacity by the Jennings Sullivan Rubber Company in the late 1910's. He later worked as a machinist in a retail store.

By 1920, Pearl and Homer lived with his sister and brother-in-law, Beulah F. and Louis Monroe Story, and Homer's maternal grandmother, Jedidiah Caroline (nee Rittenhaus) Rutherford. Jedidiah died in East St. Louis in 1922, and Homer's brother-in-law, Louis Story, passed away in 1927 in Hillsboro, Montgomery County, Illinois.

Pearl's marriage to Homer ended in the early to mid-1920's. He remarried around 1926 and died in Houston, Texas in 1951.
