Major Coleman was the only son ever enumerated on a census record with his parents, Alexander and Charlotte Coleman. He was born about 1839 joining six older sisters at home. The 1850 census is the first enumeration listing the names of all family members in each household. Only the two youngest girls appeared with Major on that one, Electa and Jeanette. There were a number of Coleman families living in Onondaga County at that time but it is unknown if all of them were related to Alex and Charlotte.

Major married Ruth Ann Hoag soon after the 1860 census count. Their first child was born in 1862, a son they named Lugene although he dropped the L as an adult and became known to everyone as Eugene. He was followed by Duane two years later and then Anna, Charlotte, Frances, William, and Minerva spread out over the next fifteen years.

Ruth appeared with William and Minerva on the New York census for 1892 but was not found on the U.S. enumeration in 1900. She is listed as a widow. Major’s parents are buried in Elbridge Rural Cemetery in Onondaga County, New York. Prior to his death, Major and Ruth lived in Elbridge. The location of their graves is unknown but their life in the Elbridge area hints at a burial somewhere within Onondaga County at least and probably within the Jordan or Elbridge communities.
