William E. “Bill” Schmidt, age 63, of Delavan, Illinois, died on May 20, 2016 at Unity Point Health Methodist after a long illness. He was born on September 8, 1952 to John T. and Winifred (Orton) Schmidt of Farmington, Illinois, both of whom preceded him in death.

He is survived by his sister, Lynden Schmidt of Peoria.

After graduating from Bradley University, he moved to Delavan and began teaching in 1976 at Green Valley High School, went to Midwest Central School District after the school consolidation and retired from there after 36 years. He was a co-founder of the Green Valley Education Association, and for many years served as its president and chief negotiator. He served on the Ayer Public Library Board of Trustees for the past 29 years, serving the last 13 of those years as Board President. He also served two terms on the Delavan City Council as a First Ward Alderman and Police Chairman. He was a member and Vice President of the Delavan Community Historical Society, a member of the Delavan Optimist Club, contributed articles to the Delavan Times and was one of the original founders of the Delavan Civil War Days. He was an active participant and researcher on the restoration projects of Delavan’s historic Grand Army of the Republic triangle and cannon and Third Street Bridge. He was an avid Chicago Bears, Cubs and Blackhawks fan, and was a season ticket holder to Peoria hockey teams since 1974. But most of all he loved Peoria Rivermen Hockey and, until his last illness, never missed a home game – a milestone for which the team once honored him in a pre-game ceremony.

Thank you to all his friends and neighbors who faithfully visited him in the hospital and sent him words of love and encouragement. He will be greatly missed by his community, his friends and his family.

Pursuant to his last wishes, there will be no visitation but a graveside service will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at Elmwood Cemetery in Elmwood, IL. Anderson-Sedgwick Funeral Home in Farmington, IL is in charge of arrangements.
