Scandinavian prince. He was of the Oldenburg Dynasty and the only one of the sons of King Christian II and Queen Elizabeth of Denmark, Norway and Sweden to survive infancy. Named for his paternal grandfather he was also called Hans. He left Denmark with his parents and sisters in 1523 when his father had lost the throne there. He settled with the family in the Netherlands and Belgium. When his mother died, his uncle Emperor Charles V took care of him in Regensburg. He was acknowledged as crown prince as late as 1532 when is father was in Norway trying to regain the thrones, but he died the same year. Considered able and talented, he is important to the history of Scandinavia because of his early death, which dashed the hopes of his father's supporters that their branch of the dynasty would continue to rule, no matter that his two sisters claimed the Nordic thrones for most of their remaining lives. He was buried in St. Peter's Abbey in Ghent but in 1883 his remains and those of his mother were moved to Denmark.
