July 15, 1853: organizational meeting of the congregation was held at Stephen Darter's home. Soon after a revival meeting was held at the Shipley house. Emmanuel Rutledge and Solomon Bachman led in the organization of the revival meeting, which was called Beech Spring. The name was soon afterwards changed to Piney Grove, the name the congregation has held ever since. The first church meeting house was built of logs and is said to have been completed by 1855. It was situated on land given by Wells Jones.

May, 1855: Piney Grove Church session, Hawkins Co., TN - Sermon by Brother Elder Solomon Bachman. Received by Baptism: Culora Manurvy, a slave owned by R. Darter and Edna, a slave owned by William Lewis.
During the Civil War there were long intervals that the church was without a pastor and no church records were kept, however, the following persons did serve as pastor: Solomon Bachman, Elbert Manes, J.B. Horn, Baxter Rutledge and William Barker, 1858-1861.

September 12, 1869: at Oak Grove School House, Hawkins Co., TN, a group of seven charter members began Oak Grove Baptist Church. A presbytery, consisting of Eli Ratliff, Solomon Bachman, and Nathan Baxter, officiated in the organization. The Articles of Faith of the McPheeters Bend Baptist Church were adopted for the new church. The doors of the church were then opened and on Sunday, September 13, 1869 thirty-six baptisms were administered.
