A solemn requiem high mass was held Monday in St. Joseph's church for Henry Welle, age 85, who died Friday, January 27th in St. Gabriel's hospital after a lingering illness. Rev. Henry Mehr, O.S.C, Crosier College, Onamia, a nephew and godchild of Mr. Welle, was the celebrant. Rev. Cyril, O.S.C., St. Martin, was deacon and Rev. Christ Mehr, O.S.C., Syracuse, Ind. was sub-deacon. Other priests in the sanctuary were Rev. Sylvester Gall, Elk River, Father Michael, Belle Prairie; Rev. Schulzetenberg, Pierz; Also in attendance were six sisters from St. Francis Convent and St. Otto's Home, Little Falls; and seven sisters from Elk River.
The sisters here were Sr. Mary Carmita, O.S.F., Sr. Mary Sarah, O.S.F., Sr. Mary Bonaventure, O.S.F., Sr. Mary Emily, O.S.F., Sr. Mary Timothy, O.S.F., Sr. Mary Giles, Elk River; Sr. Mary Doris, O.S.F. Sr. Mary Reparata, O.S.F., Sr. Mary Regis, O.S.F., Sr. Mary Mark, O.S.F., Sr. Mary Oblata, O.S.F., Little Falls.
Pallbearers were all nephews of the deceased and the first three were also his godchildren. They are: Irvin Welle and Henry Welle, Sauk Center; Edwin Welle, Richmond; Leo Welle, Lastrup; Bill Welle, Sauk Center; and Tony Welle, Spring Hill.
Coming from away to attend the funeral were people from Meire Grove, Melrose, Richmond, Walker, Onamia, Spring Hill, Little Falls, St. Cloud, St. Paul, Rochester, St. Martin and Lastrup.
Henry Welle was born in Spring Hill, Minn. September 14, 1875, the son of Christopher and Elizabeth Welle. He married Pauline Ortman November 11, 1902 in Meire Grove. They farmed for many years north of Lastrup and retired to Pierz about 11 years ago.
Twelve children survive. They are: Norbert, Henry, Jr., and Harold, Lastrup; Victor and Herman, Little Falls; Ambrose, Mrs. Ed (Olivia) Faust, Pierz; Mrs. Ed (Marie) Harrison, Little Falls; Mrs. James (Betty) DeFoe, St. Paul; Mrs. Jerome (Lydia) Flicker, Rochester; Mrs. Clarence (Hilda) Ethen, St. Cloud; Sr. Mary Carletta, O.S.F., Elk River.
There are 43 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. One brother, George Welle, and one sister, Mrs. Frank Fuchs, Clarkston, Wash., also survive.
