Clegg, Jonathan (Father)

Mrs. Alice C. Broadhead who's death was announced in last's week issue of the Wave was born in Lancashire, England October 23, 1846 and was the daughter of Jonathan Clegg and Ellen Clegg. In 1856 she came to Utah crossing the Plains in Martin's Hand Cart Company, and suffered as did most of those of that Company, with extreme cold and hunger, yet all arrived safely in the valleys. The family first settled in Provo but in 1860 they came to this valley and have been a factor for good in its upbuilding. On January 15 on that year she married Robert Broadhead, who was one of the very first settlers of the valley. To them were born thirteen children, ten of whom were present at the funeral services. And three of whom came from Idaho. Her grandfather is said to have been the second man baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints in England. Mr. Broadhead died here on March 15, 1916, but from the very first entrance of these people into the valley they took active part in the upbuilding of Heber and of the Wasatch County, and remained consitent members of the church to the time of death. They leave a large family of stalwart sons and daughters to perpetuate their name and to emulate their worthy example. Besides the children of this worthy couple, they leave eighty grandchildren and seventy three great-grandchildren as direct descendants. The funeral service for Mrs. Broadhead were held at the Heber Second Ward Chapel last Friday afternoon and were well attended. The music was appropriate and the speakers highly eulogized the life of the deceased. The body was intered beside of her life's companion in the family lot in the Heber Valley Cemetery.

Her family departed Liverpool on May 25, 1856 arrived in Boston June 30, 1856. Alice 9 and her family: father Jonathan 40, mother Ellen 40, William 14, Henry 3, Margaret 7 months. Older Brother James was in the Military he came later.
