David was born in Harrison Co VA.in 1828 to a well established family who came from Germany with William Penn to populate the colony of Pennsylvania. They later moved to VA. He married Martha Jane Wetzel in 1848 in Taylor Co. Va. In 1861 he answered the call of duty and enlisted in the 7th W VA, known as the Bloody 7th. He was injured at Antietam in September 1862 and carried a mini ball in his lung, lodged next to his sternum, for the rest of his life, 14 years. After a stay of 1 1/2 years in the Parkersburg Hospital, he moved his family to Indiana, Dubois and then Gibson Co. His health deteriorated. An expert in Civil War history believes the mini ball, made of lead, would have given him lead poisoning, but that was unknown at that time.
