He is survived by his grandson, Scott Ward, and his wife, Lesley of Houston; his son-in-law, Lavelle Ward of Houston; one sister, Cora Mae Simmons of Fannett; and one brother, Nelson Hargraves of Houston. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-one years, Opal; his daughter, Gloria Mae Ward; his parents; five brothers; and two sisters.
After serving his country in the Army during World War II, Melvin worked for the Texas Highway Department. Following his retirement, he spent time working in his garden and as am active member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Fannett.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 9894 Gilbert Rd., Fannett with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 4955 Pine St., Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard's 134 W. Buccaneer Dr. Winnie. A gathering of family and friends will be from 9:00 am to 9:45 am Wednesday at the church.
