American cat. His year of birth is an estimate. He was from a farm near Batavia, Illinois. The farmer gave him to the family of C. Erik Riddderstedt due to a mouse problem that the family was having in their garage. He lived for the rest of his life at 1112 S. Batavia Avenue in Batavia. The family was concerned about how their German Shepherd King would react to a cat in the family. He and King became best friends. King, who loved water and rain, would shield Pete against it. He and King devised a cooperative method of hunting squirrels that had teased King for years. King would chase them up into one of the huge oak trees in the yard, Pete would climb up and knock the squirrel down into the dog's mouth and the cat would climb back down and eat the squirrel. Pete was killed by a car on the busy Avenue in front of the family's yard and was found by the kids stiff as a board in the gutter. King lay mourning by his grave in the front yard for days.
