Dr. David Elam Amstutz, born May 31, 1940, in Gresham, Oregon, passed away June 5, 2016.

David earned the rank of Eagle scout at age 13. David earned a master's degree from Texas A&M University and a Ph.D. from Oregon State University. David was an oceanographer for more than 50 years. David was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason. David was an honorary member of the Chancellor Ruritan Club, a life member of the NRA and the U.S. Navy League, and a member of the Spotsylvania Farm Bureau. David proudly served on the commissioning committee of the USS Chancellorsville CG62.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mary Ann; their son, Alfred and his wife, Dusty; and grandsons Kiernan and Ian.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A service with Masonic rites will be held at noon, Friday, June 10, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of Dr. David E. Amstutz, to James Madison University, the David Kruger Scottish Rite program.
