Winifred Register was born in 1811 in North Carolina to Thomas Register and Susan Rogers. She travelled to Alabama with her family.A 19 yar old bride Winifred was a very capable southern frontier wife to James Pynes who had extensive land holdings and was active in civic employment. She and James raised three beautiful daughters. Being concerned about the education of the Alabama youth James travelled to Virginia and recruited William H. Smith to return to Alabama and teach school. William Smith lived with the Pynes family, and later married their oldest daughter Penelope Carolyn. Winifred passed away at the age of 50 years when her youngest daughter was but 15 years old. She is at rest in Gordon Cemetery with her husband James and daughters.
