The 1870 US census shows that Mary was abt 59 and she and John were living in Polk Township, Hunnington Co. Indiana.
The 1880 US census shows Mary a widow and living in Antioch, Huntington, Indiana.

Mrs. Mary E (Summers) Schermerhorn, known to all as Grandmother Schermerhorn, died at the residence of her son in law, Gerry Van Dolsen (and Catherine Cordalia "Dalia" Schermerhorn-Van Dolsen) in this city, last Friday morning. She was 79 years of age, and her illness was of brief duration. Her funeral occured at the M.E. Church, Saturday afternoon and was largely attended, Rev. Swadener preaching the discourse. Grandmother Schermerhorn was greatly respected, and many warm friends hear with sorrow of her death. She was a good Christian woman, and a memeber of the Methodist Church.
