The following information is from the US Censuses of 1850 through 1880. There is a confusion between the Morris Township of Washington County, PA and the township of the same name, but in Greene County, PA. The two Morris Townships are contiguous split by the county line. Although the censuses of 1850, 1860, and 1870 give Hugh's residence as Greene County, Hugh's obituary and the 1880 census a year later give his residence as Washington County. His residence was in the Old Concord Neighborhood of Morris Township which is close to the Washington/Greene County boundary. Possibly his homestead was close to the county line and was included for those years in the Greene County accounting.
1850 Farmer in Morris Township, Greene County, PA
1860 Farmer in Morris Township, Greene County, PA
1860 about this year his wife Elizabeth died at about age 43
1868 son Thomas graduated from Waynesburg College
1869 Thomas moved to Paola, Kansas to study law
1870 Farmer in Morris Township, Greene County, PA
1870 to 1875 children Thomas, Eva, Frank, Jane and John Hamilton move to Paola, Kansas
1880 After Hugh died the same people living in the household in 1870 are listed in a Morris Township of Washington County, PA. His obituary reads Washington County which was probably written from information from one or more of Hugh's children who attended him: Anne Marie, Thomas Maxwell, and George T. Carroll.

Obituary: Carroll--At his residence, in Washington county, Pennsylvania, February 22d, 1879, after a lingering illness of several months, Hugh Carroll, aged about 65 years, father of Thomas M. and Frank S. Carroll, of this place.
Thus passed away a kind and indulgent father, a faithful friend and a sincere Christian, leaving the memory of his untarnished life--the richest heritage on earth--to his children. Beside our sweet mother, under the sod of the dear old hills, where she has been resting nearly a score of years, he has been laid. Side by side in the quiet old chruch yard they sleep together. Their work is done. They rest in peace.
"Alas for him who never sees
The stars shine through his cypress trees!
Who hopeless lays his dead away,
Nor looks to see the breaking day
Across the mournful marbles play!
Who has not learned, in hours of trust,
Since He who knows our need is just,
That somehow, somewhere meet we must." (adapted from John Greenleaf Whittier's Snow Bound 1865)

Hugh and Elizabeth's grave sites have not been found, but two likely candidates are:

(1) the Windy Gap Presbyterian Church Cemetery in West Finley, Washington County, PA. Hugh died 22 Feb 1879 while his son, George T.'s daughter, M. Bertie Carroll, died that same year 10 July 1879 of Diphtheria at the age of four and is listed in that cemetery with FAG# 46777209. Or,

2) in the Old Concord Presbyterian Church graveyard located at the corner of Prosperity Pike (HWY 18) and Old Concord Road in the "Old Concord Neighborhood" on the south side of 18 at Harvey Road in Morris Township. Hugh and Elizabeth Carroll lived in the Old Concord Neighborhood (source: Hugh's granddaughter Elizabeth Carroll Young from E.R. Forrest's History of Washington County, Pennsylvania, Vol. II. Biography of Elizabeth Carroll Young. S. J. Clarke Publishing Co. Chicago. 1926. Page 509.). The Old Concord Church graveyard is located on a hillside slope adjacent to the church as might have been the "dear old hills" referenced in his obituary. Since Hugh's wife Elizabeth died nearly twenty years before he did, it is more likely that the two are buried in the Old Concord "hillside" "old church" graveyard and not in West Finley. An 1870s map of the area shows a Carroll farm one mile north of the Old Concord Church on Harvey Road that leads north from the church.

The Carroll children include:
Anne Marie
Thomas Maxwell
Mary Ellen (Eva, Evie) (married Robert Fordyce; moved to San Diego, California)
George T.
Francis S. (Johnathan F. in Hugh's will)
Jane (married J.C. Rush; moved to Los Angeles, California)
John Hamilton
