Author of "History of the Carrolls" a family of Washington Co. PA published in 1897.
Comments by him on his political views in 1897:
This completes the history of the Carrolls up to the present time (1897) and the following will be a supplement concerning the writer's politics.

There were at the time that Jackson ran for President eight boys of us, viz: William, John, Robert, James, Thomas, Hugh, and myself were all for Jackson, while father (James Carroll Sr.) and Hamilton were Whigs. We followed this line until the time of Buchanan. When he ceased to be a Democrat we left the party and voted for Fremont. He was defeated. We afterwards voted for Abraham Lincoln and since the Republicans ceased to be Republicans we left them, and joined the American Party who are in favor of gold and silver of the Constitution as it was formed and paper all legal tender and wipe out all national bank money and the government furnished all the money for the nation. The government issued for every person fifty dollars per capita and have postal banks to secure our deposits and if we want money we can borrow it at 2 percent instead of paying 4 percent on the bond and 7 for discount.

I am like the little boy with the coon. There was a man who had a pet coon in a cage at the side of his house. Three boys came there and all three wanted the coon. The man told them who ever gave him the correct answer to a question he asked would get the coon. He asked one what he was. He answered they were all Democrates. He asked the other the same and he answered that they were all Republicans and had never been anything else. The third was asked the same question and he said he was anything under the heavens for the coon. I am anything in the world for the money of the Constitution and opposed to all corporations which rob the people.

Equal rights to all and special privileges to none. We were defeated last campaign by the bribery of the "gold bugs" but in four years we will land them on the shores where peace and mercy will never reach them.
