FC3 - U S Navy - WW II - Killed in Action FC3 is Fire Control 3rd class. Fire Control indicates weapon combat, not putting out fires.

William served on the heroic and noble USS Eversole. The ship rescued downed pilots and guarded damaged escort carriers in the Philipines in WWII. He fought in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. On October 28, 1944 she was hit by 2 torpedoes from the Japanese 1-45. The crew was ordered to abandon ship, but the I-45 surfaced and shot and killed about 30 survivors in the water,. The sub then dived and then caused an underwater explosion which killed even more sailors. Overall the USS Eversole lost 70 of her crew. Later 139 survivors were rescued when 2 other escorts saw their flashlight signal in the ocean darkness;

I-45 was sunk not long after when another Destroyer Escort, the USS DE 634 avenged the USS Eversole.
