Actress. Born Jane Brotherton in Bozeman, Montana, she acted in Broadway productions in the 1940s and 1950s. She created the role of Gertie in the original 1943 Broadway production of “Oklahoma,” played multiple roles in the 1948 production of “Inside U.S.A.,” and played Donna Lucia D’Alvadorez in the 1948 production of “Where’s Charley?” In 1950 she traveled to Germany to begin an opera career. Her most notable performance was singing the part of Elettra in Wolfgang Mozart's “Idomeneo” at the Salzburg Festival in 1951. Her single movie credit was for the role of Clementine Brown in “Sailor’s Holiday” (1944) with Arthur Lake and Shelley Winters. She was one of the last surviving members of the Abstract Expressionists artists movement, a post-World War II art movement which developed in New York in the 1940s. She was the subject of Jackson Pollock’s black and white painting “No. 7” which is now owned and displayed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. She was a close friend of Tennessee Williams who was the best man at her wedding to sculptor Tony Smith in 1943. She returned to theater in the 1980s, appearing in avant-garde productions. She had the lead role in the no wave opera "XS: The Opera Opus" created by composer Rhys Chatham and artist Joseph Chatham.
