Mathew was the fifth of 8 children born to Michael and Margaretha (Heldt) Welter.
He married Anna Elizabeth Weller on November 25, 1902 at St Hubert's Catholic Church in Chanhassen (Carver), MN. They had 10 children: Elizabeth Anna, Charles Jacob, Caroline Appolonia, Florentine Lambert, Lorraine Theresa, Edna Rose, Mildred Margaret, Adeline Marie, Bernard N, and Elfrida A.
Mathew and Anna first farmed west of Chanhassen near Highway 5. Their last farm was where Lake Ann Park is now.

Funeral services for the late Mathew Welter were held Wednesday, December 21, at St Hubert's Catholic church in Chanhassen. Rev Father Firmin Weber officiated the requiem mass with interment in the church cemetery.
Mathew Welter passed away Saturday, December 17, at St Mary's Hospital in Minneapolis. Death was attributed to a heart attack at the age of 82 years, 10 months and 27 days.
Born January 20, 1878 in Chanhassen Township, the deceased was the son of the late Michael and Margaret Welter. He attended St Hubert's Catholic School in Chanhassen and grew to manhood in the local area.
On November 25, 1902, he was united in marriage with Anna Weller. Ten children blessed this union.
Survivors, in addition to the deceased's wife, are children Mrs John (Elizabeth) Jeurissen of Glen Lake, Charles J Welter of Chanhassen, Mrs Ray (Caroline) Williams of Victoria, Florentine L Welter of Chaska, Mrs Ray (Lorraine) Notermann of Victoria, Mrs Arthur (Edna) Rosckes of Chaska, Mrs Henry (Mildred) Pauly of St Bonifacius, Mrs Roman (Adeline) Wartman of Excelsior, Bernard N Welter of St Louis Park, and Mrs Nels (Elfrieda) Anderson of Norwalk, California.
Other immediate survivors include two brothers, Martin Welter of Chaska, and John Welter of Chanhassen; a sister, Mrs Albert Buschkowsky of Palmdale, California; 73 grandchildren, and 57 great-grandchildren.
The deceased farmed until retirement and was a loving husband and father. He was a member of the St Anthony Society of St Hubert's church.
Pallbearers, all grandsons, were: Alvin Jeurissen, Harold Welter, Marvin Williams, Vincent Welter, Walter Notermann and Donald Rosckes.
Honorary pallbearers were neighbors Albert Pauly, John Kerber, William Klein, Dan Kerber, William Kerber and William Bongard.
Many relatives and friends from Minneapolis, Prior Lake, St Louis Park, Hopkins, Eden Prairie, St Bonifacius, Victoria, Chaska, Excelsior, Jordan, Rosemount, St Paul, Richfield, and Chanhassen attended the wake and funeral.
