June Kennedy Laflin, 77, historical preservationist
June Kennedy Laflin, 77, member of a pioneer Chicago family and a patron of historical preservation, died Monday in Lake Forest Hospital.
Although Mrs. Laflin was active in many civic groups, her primary interest was the renovation of Gunston Hall, home of George Mason, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Mrs. Laflin served as a trustee and regent of Mason's homestead located south of George Washington's Mount Vernon in Virginia.
A native of Pittsburgh and a graduate of Wellesley College in Massachusetts, she had been a Lake Forest resident since 1932, when she married Louis Ellsworth Laflin Jr. The late Mr. Laflin was a descendant of Chicago settler Matthew Laflin and a playwright who wrote a guide to the 1933 World's Fair.
Mrs. Laflin was a member of the women's board of the University of Chicago and of the Field Museum and past president of the Illinois Society of Colonial Dames of the the Lake Forest Garden Club.
She also was a member of the Lake Forest Coterie, Friday Club of Chicago, the Antiquarian Society of the Art Institute, the Guild of the Chicago Historical Society and an honorary member of the Contemporary Club.
She is survived by a son, Louis E. Laflin III; a daughter, Mary Jo Field, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Lake Forest. Burial will be private.
