ESTHER MAKI BRECHTEL passed away at the age of 85 after a lengthy illness. She graduated with honors from Fortuna High School at age 16 and moved to the Bay Area in 1936 where she fell in love with the late William A. "Bill" Brechtel. Bill was a San Lorenzo School Board member for 10 years. Esther was a skilled account technician for Hayward Unified School District for 25 years, until her retirement in 1982. Esther was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, a gifted seamstress, gardener and an avid S.F. Giants fan. She enjoyed doing needlework and puzzles in her later years and maintained a keen sense of humor throughout her life. Esther is survived by her children, Lynn Y. Brechtel of Hayward, Kristine Houghlet of Oakland and Donald R. Brechtel of Hayward; grandchildren, Kristina M. Hartung of Austin, TX and Erika and Darrel Patchin of Roseville. She also leaves her brother, Allan Maki of Carlotta, CA; nieces, Patricia Aguiar of Los Gatos, CA; Sharon Maki of Fortuna, CA and Patricia Ball of New Port Richey, FL. Friends are invited to attend the funeral at SORENSEN BROS. MORTUARY, 1140 B St., Hayward, March 22, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. SORENSEN BROS.
