Roy Thomas, age 85, of Aurora, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at his home.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, June 22nd at the Evangelical Covenant Church. Rev. Karl Larson will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the Evangelical Covenant Church, 1009 1st Street in Aurora. Interment will be in the Tahlequah City Cemetery in Tahlequah, Oklahoma at 10:00 A.M., Friday, June 24. Higby-McQuiston Mortuary is in charge of Nebraska arrangements and Hart Funeral Home is in charge of Oklahoma arrangements. Roy Leonard Thomas, the son of Herbert and Tena Susan (Walthall) Thomas, was born April 10, 1931, at Kansas City, Kansas and passed away at Aurora, Nebraska, on June18, 2016, at the age of 85.
Roy grew up in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and graduated from Bagley High School in 1950. He joined the Oklahoma National Guard 45th Infantry Division 279th Infantry Regiment during high school. Shortly after graduation he was called to active duty and served his country for four years. During the Korean War he was stationed in Japan.
In 1955, he was united in marriage to Betty Louise Johns. To this union five children were born; Bretta, Randy, Angela, Tammie and Aimee. Roy raised the three younger girls from an early age as a single father, with their help, of course.
Roy spent the last twenty years of his career as a construction superintendent for HBE Corporation, overseeing many construction projects throughout the United States. Prior to that, he worked for the Kansas City Power and Light Company and in various construction management jobs in Texas and Florida. He retired from HBE in 2006 but was still instrumental in overseeing construction of a major addition to Memorial Hospital in Aurora during 2006 and 2007. He was a skilled carpenter and built many pieces of furniture for the family.
Roy married Carol (Weathersby) Thomas on January 2, 1998. They spent their married life in Aurora, where Roy enjoyed assisting Carol with her real estate business and rental houses, caring for his horse Amber, and singing in the church choir.
Throughout his life Roy enjoyed raising and riding horses and was a long-time member of the American Quarter Horse Association. He particularly liked telling stories of his younger years when horses were his primary mode of transportation. A special event for him each year was riding Amber in the A’ror’n Days Parade with his good friend Delmer Wadell. Roy participated in the Aurora Men’s Senior Golf League and made many friends there although scorekeeping was never an area of strength. He was a singer and a guitar player from an early age. His band, ‘Roy and the Westernettes’, performed in high school and on the radio and he also performed in Stars and Stripes while in the National Guard. He especially liked performing at church and for family and friends. Roy was a people person and a family man and he worked hard to keep the Thomas family reunions going and attended all that he could.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents; previous wife Betty Johns; brother, Ray Thomas, son-in-law, Jerry Howard, in-laws Ernest and Louise Johns, and brother and sister-in-law Leo and Dorothy Jolliff.
Those left to cherish Roy’s memory are his wife Carol of Aurora; five children, Bretta Howard of Villa Rica, Georgia, Randy Thomas of Houston, Texas, Angela Thomas of Houston, Texas, Tammie Thomas of San Antonio, Texas and Aimee (Russell) Goodwin of Bryan, Texas; five grandchildren, Eric Thomas, Andra (Earl) Stark, Pierce Goodwin, Aleena Goodwin and John Buggle Jr.; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, David (Mary Lou) Thomas, Jay (Debbie) Thomas and Jim (Carolyn) Thomas, all of Tahlequah, Oklahoma and two sisters, Judy (Bob) Lamons of Shawnee, Kansas and Mary Jane Smith of Tahlequah, Oklahoma; Carol’s family, including her four children, Robin (Kip) Hurley of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, John (Nancy) Thomas of Aurora, Stacie Thomas-Hamel of Omaha and Wendy (Brent) Dethlefs of Aurora; eight grandchildren, Michael (Dana) Hurley, Carly Hurley, John (Aleta) Thomas, Nathaniel Chitwood, Michael Chitwood, Chloe Hamel and fiancé Jake LaMontia, Sophie Hamel, and Samuel Wiarda; four great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
