German Actor. Götz George was a popular German actor for five decades in theater, television, and movies. His career started on stage in 1950. Three years later, he made his film debut with roles in Karl May movies. Having grown up in Berlin (West), he worked at theaters in his home city and Goettingen. In the 1960s, he was a youth idol and several times the cover star of the youth magazine Bravo. Later, he was prominent, especially in police TV dramas like "Der Kommissar," "Tatort," "Derrick," and "Der Alte." From time to time, he played criminals, as in "The Cat." In the 1980s, he became probably the most popular German detective actor as DSI Schimanski in the TV crime series Tatort. He played a gruff and loutish Duisburg cop who lived above all on beer and curry sausage.

George's appearances in numerous successful TV shows and movies have made him one of the most well-known and decorated German actors of our time. He was honored as a character actor in both serious and satirical roles and won several awards. He had a total of 29 wins and 12 nominations.
