Donald Lloyd Bergeson, age 82, of Peshtigo, WI passed away peacefully with his family at his side at Rennes Health Care Center-West, on June 23, 2016. He was born on March 16, 1934 to the late Sylvia and Albert Bergeson. Don grew up on the family farm with his brothers and sisters. Farming was always in his blood.

In 1952, Don graduated from Peshtigo High School. He served during the Korean War; enlisting in the Marine Corp. in 1953. During Armistice, he was shipped to Yokohama, Japan, where he was part of the 3rd Infantry Division as a Supply Sargent Clerk. Don spoke of the rough waters of ship ride to Japan saying “Even the eggs turned green.”
While in Japan, he met Sachiko Oike (Sato Ooike). They married on January 7, 1957 at the US Embassy in Kamakura, Japan.

After his enlistment, Don took up Dairy Farming in Peshtigo.
Don and Sachiko had 5 children; Bob, Dennis, Kimiko, Julie and Doug. They had 9 wonderful years together, “some bad, but mostly good” as Don would say. Then on June 4, 1966, his beloved Sachiko passed away. She was 42 years old.

The dark days passed slowly, but a light was provided to him; in 1972, Don met Shirley Raygo at the Colonial Café in Peshtigo. They married on June 10, 1973. Don and Shirley had two children; Tammy and Andy. Don and Shirley worked the land and the Dairy Farm. They had a U-Pick vegetable farm known in all the surrounding counties.

In 1997, Don retired from Dairy Farming. From that time on, Don and Shirley expanded on the U-Pick Vegetable Farm; including pumpkin rides, corn mazes and a variety of animals for customers to see; such as llamas, ponies, goats, ducks, cats, dogs and chickens. Last year, in 2015, his failing health prevented him from working the land he so loved. His legacy of farming the land and the U-Pick Vegetable Farm lives on with the care of his son and family, Doug Bergeson.

Don will be sadly missed by his wife of 43 years, Shirley (Raygo); his children Bob Bergeson(Robin), Dennis Bergeson, Kimiko Ott, Julie Pichler(James), Douglas Bergeson(Donna), Tammy Bulin(Eric) and Andy Bergeson(Mandy); nephews John Leslie(Judy), Dan Leslie(Rosemary), Steve Leslie(Marlene), cousin Dale Johnston(Rosemary), and sister Anna Dahl (Plorckeleman) of Green Bay. He is also survived by his 18 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Don is preceded in death by his parents Sylvia and Albert Bergeson, uncle Leander Bergeson, aunt Ruth Johnston, brother Bobby Bergeson, sisters Kathryn Leslie(George) and Dorothy Carr (Robert).

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 1, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1600 University Drive, Marinette, with Pastor James Wendt presiding. Don’s family will receive family and friends at the church from 9:00 AM until time of services at 12:00 Noon.

A special service will be at Riverside Cemetery in Peshtigo with Military Honors presented by the 20 Year Club and the Peshtigo American Legion 312 at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 9th.
