Research by J. Kelsey Jones:
John McClelland born July 1754 (bible record – no day given only month and year) Ireland (pension application of widow Anna Maria), served in the American Revolution in a company commanded by Colonel Irwin in Pennsylvania, married Jan or Feb 1784 (pension application of widow Anna Maria) Anna Maria Weller born 25 May 1760 (bible record) baptised 7 June 1760 Reformed Church, Montgomery, New York daughter of Hieronimus Weller and Elsie Buchstaber (Bookstaver). Anna Maria's brother Peter Weller in her pension application stated they were married Jan or Feb 1784 by Rev. Vanness as pastor of the Lutheran Reformed Church, town of Shawangunk, Ulster County, New York. Settled on lot 189 in Harpersfield in what became Delaware County, New York. John was enumerated in Harpersfield, Montgomery County (this took in a large section of present New York and if the family was in Delhi by that date Delhi and Delaware County had not yet been formed) in 1790 with one male over age sixteen (born before 1774), three males under age sixteen (born 1775-90), and two females. St. Andrew's Masonic Lodge, No 289, F. & A. M. was constituted and chartered as No. 48, December 26th, 1796, at Hobart and John McClelland was an original member. John appears on the first assessment of Delhi, Delaware County taken in 1798, occupant of land owned by Temple Franklin, frame house, on main road near courthouse (part of the Franklin Patent of which Governor William Franklin conveyed to his son William Temple Franklin who resided in France and England). After Delaware County was erected in 1797, from parts of the Counties of Ulster and Otsego, a separate Court System had to be established for it. Jurors, qualified to serve in those courts, were selected from lists prepared by the Supervisor and Assessors of each respective Town in the County. These Lists were forwarded to the County Clerk and Jury panels were selected from them. Juror Lists were made up of white male U.S. citizens, who were 21 years old but not 60, and who owned (or in Delaware County could also be on land held under lease) of a set value above any mortgage, or other lien thereon. John appears on the juror list in 1800, farmer, residence at Delhi. Enumerated in Delhi in 1800 with three males under age ten (born 1791-1800), two males of age ten and under age sixteen (born 1785-90), one male of age sixteen and under age twenty six (born 1775-84), one male over age forty five (born before 1755), one female under age ten (born 1791-1800), two females of age ten and under age sixteen (born 1785-90), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (born 1756-74). Settled in what would become Columbia Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania in 1808 (deposition of son Peter) on Sugar Creek west of what would become the hamlet of Columbia Cross Roads. Enumerated in Smithfield, Lycoming County (Columbia Township and Bradford County net yet formed), Pennsylvania in 1810 with two males of age ten and under age sixteen (born 1795-1800), three males of age sixteen and under age twenty six (born 1785-94), one male over age forty five (born before 1765), one female under age ten (born 1801-10), one female of age ten and under age sixteen (born 1795-1800), two females of age sixteen and under age twenty six (born 1785-94), and one female over age forty five (born before 1765). John appears on the first assessment of Columbia Township in 1814 with 30 improved acres, 186 unimproved acres, 2 cows, 1 horse. John appears on a list of grand jurors December Session 1815 and 5 Feb 1816, Columbia Township, farmer. Application for pension (W2833) dated 2 June 1819, stated he enlisted Dec 1775 or Jan 1776 for 1 year under Captain William Rippey in 6th Pennsylvania Line and in March 1777 for three years in Captain William Parker's Company in Colonel Irwin's Regiment of 7th Pennsylvania line, discharged March 1780 at Morristown, New Jersey, participated in Battles of Brandywine and Germantown. Pension was to begin 2 June 1819 at $8 per month with arrears amounting to $24.76. John died 16 Nov 1821 (pension and bible record). Pioneer and Patriot Families by Heverly indicates John was 62 at the time of his death, but if he was born July 1754 he would have been 67. Anna enumerated with son Peter in 1820. On 21 Mar 1822 Anna became a member of the Presbyterian Church of Troy. Enumerated with son Peter in 1830. Widow's application dated 2 Nov 1838, certificate of pension issued 8 August 1839 with arrears to the 4th of Mar 1839 amounting to $280.00 with payment of $80 per year. Anna signed by mark. Anna was enumerated with son Peter in 1840. Anna died 24 July 1842 (obituary, Presbyterian Church record, and deposition of son Peter).
