Founding Prior of St. Benedict's Abbey at Fort Augustus, Scotland, where he led from 1876-1883.

Born Joseph Vaughan, one of fourteen children of Colonel John Francis and Eliza (Rolls) Vaughan of Courtfield, Rev. Father Jerome Vaughan, O.S.B., entered the Order of St. Benedict at Downside Abbey in 1859, taking simple vows in 1861. He was ordained a Catholic priest at Belmont Abbey on Jan. 15, 1867, and served in the Diocese of Newport. While his time at Fort Augustus met with much success, internal conflict prompted him to leave after seven years. He then spent time at the abbeys of Monte Cassino and at Ramsgate, before going on a world tour of missionary evangelization. His fragile health worsened while in California, and after an operation there he returned to St. Peter's Priory in Chorlton, where he died at age 55. Dom Jerome was the brother of Cardinal Herbert Vaughan , Archbishop of Westminster; Archbishop Roger Vaughan of Sydney, Australia; Rev. John S. Vaughan , Bishop of Salford; Rev. Bernard Vaughan , S.J.; and Rev. Fr. Kenelm Vaughan , missionary priest. Four of his sisters also entered religious life.
