Charles married Christine Berndt in North Dakota abt 1899 she was born in Russia and had come to America in 1889. Her family originally came from Prussia.
When Charles was 17 he shortened his last name to Sherman, and went to North Dakota to find work. But he always made sure his children knew that his real name was Schermerhorn.
Charles and Christine lived in Campbell County, South Dakota where they raised their children but around 1930 He and his two son's Elmer and Clarence went to Idaho to find work short after the rest of the family came west and they moved to Toledo, Oregon. All of their children even the married ones followed them west. Together Charles and Christine had 11 children, 1 son Joseph died shortly after birth and their last living daughter Pearl died in 2009 at age 95.
Charles was the eldest son of Rachel Bonewitz Schermerhorn and his Father was John Dorvil Schermerhorn Jr. His father and mother are buried in Barnes Cemetery in Hunnington Co. IN. his father was a Civil War Veteran.
Charles is direct descendent of Janse Jacob Schermerhorn and is of The Schodack Branch.
