William Sheridan Hurst, Sr. was born to Elizabeth Greenlaw and Joseph Hurst in the fall of 1846 in Cumberland which was a historic county of North West England (in 1974 it became Cumbria). He married Lavina Brown in England, and together they had eight children. William and his wife immigrated to the United States with their, then two children about 1873. Becoming pioneer residents of Wadena county, Minnesota, where they built and operated the first Merchants hotel in the City of Wadena. Their third child, daughter Elizabeth, was first white child born in Wadena county. He probably died in Wadena, sometime after 1901 (at least) and is buried there. (bio by: Jay Lance)
