Fr William Bourke PP, who was parish priest during the building of the Cathedral, said the first mass in the Cathedral on March 7th 1859. Fr Bourke died a few weeks later and is buried in the Cathedral at the pillar of Belzoni's statue of Our Lady. He had served in the Parish since 1839.
