Kim Kwanhong was born on June 20, 1973. He was a loving husband and father.

On April 16, 2014, the MV Sewol en route from Incheon to Jeju Island capsized. There were 476 people on board, mostly high school sophomores from Danwon High School, who were on their way to Jeju Island for a school field trip. Nearly all of the Danwon High School students and teachers on board stayed put in their cabins after being instructed to do so by the ship's crew. They had trusted the crew with their lives, and did what they thought would save them. Devastatingly, none of the people inside the ship would live. The coast guard only rescued those on deck, and didn't even try to save anyone else. Hundreds of Danwon students, and several teachers, were trapped, banging on the windows, begging to be saved, but they were left to die. Most of the people were still alive during the three hours it took for the ship to sink, but they all eventually drowned when the ship became completely submerged. In the end, 304 people died. 250 of them were high school students.

After the sinking, Kwanhong dedicated his life to the recovery of the missing victims who are still trapped inside the ship. He was an experienced diver, and made many dives down to the shipwreck to search for the remains of the nine missing. There used to be 10 missing, but with his help, a student named Hwang Jihyun was recovered and returned to her loving family. Kwanhong never gave up hope for the other nine. He worked tirelessly and passionately, returning day after day to find these people.

On June 17, 2016, Kwanhong was found dead of an apparent suicide. It appears that the Sewol tragedy, and his having to recover the dead bodies of kids, had broken his heart.

He was cremated and his ashes inurned at Seunghwawon.
