Patterson, Frank and Hattie
Frank and Hattie Patterson first came thru Comanche County with their own threshing crew in the early 1900's. Frank Patterson ran the thresher and Hattie ran the "cook shack" a forerunner of the "motor home". Their oldest son and daughter, Hugh and Kitty helped their mother in the cook shack. The Patterson actually moved to Coldwater in 1941 with their youngest child, Bettie. Hattie was very active in the Coldwater Christian Church, and Frank worked for B. J. Herd. Bettie or Pat as she was known as then, was very active in all school activities (especially twirling in the band and while skating). After World War II, both Leo and Merlyn (2 and 3 sons) moved to Coldwater. Leo (also known as Pat) and Myrtle, his wife, lived in a little south of the Coldwater Laundry where Myrtle worked. Both Leo and Merlyn were carpenters, and Leo later worked in the oil fields around Coldwater. Merlyn and his wife, Mercedees and her son Armand Cross only lived here about two years, then moved back to San Diego, California. Hugh, Merlyn, Leo, and Mercedees are deceased and Myrtle (Wathins) now lives in Harrison, Arkansas. Kitty Rust lives in Stanton, California. Frank Patterson died in 1951 and Hattie in 1972, both are buried buried in Crown Hill Cemetery at Coldwater, Kansas. Bettie (Pat) moved to Wichita after graduation in 1942, where she met and married M. E. (Bill) Kerwin. Bill, after World War II, became a well known radio and television personality over KCMO in Kansas City. To this union was born two children Sharon "Cheri" (Rigney), and Bryan. They both spent many a lovely summer day with grandma and grandpa Patterson in Coldwater on the hill going north out of town. Bill is deceased and is buried in Eureka, Kansas. Bettie married Bill McIlveen September 5, 1964.
