Police officer Michael Smith was fatally gunned-down in the line of duty during a police-targeted sniper attack at an otherwise peaceful protest in downtown Dallas. Smith, a sergeant with the Dallas Police Department Sergeant was was one of five officers assassinated, a death toll that climbed overnight. Michael Smith, a Port Arthur native, earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Lamar University in 1989. He joined the Dallas Police Department that same year. His wife teaches at Mary Immaculate in Farmers Branch.

Married almost 20 years, with two children in their young teens, Smith wasn't ready to retire. He was a member of the Watermark Community Church in Dallas.

In addition to his nearly three decades of service with the Dallas police department, Smith was a seven-year Army veteran.

Sergeant Michael Joseph Smith born on October 8, 1960 in Taiwan and passed away July 7, 2016 in Dallas, TX. The Dallas Police Department has been a very important part of Michael's life for over 27 years. In those 27 years, he has received 85 commendations and awards. Outside of the DPD, he enjoyed racquetball, ping pong, and playing on the Wii with his youngest daughter, Caroline. Michael also enjoyed landscaping with Caroline and Victoria. He and the girls always planted Gerber Daisies together. Michael also loved quiet time with his girls where he would read the Bible to and with them. A servant's heart was very much a part of Michael. Along with serving the public, he also dedicated his life to working with at risk youth. He is preceded in death by father, William Joseph Smith, Sr and his mother, Yea Tieng Lai Smith. Michael is survived by his wife, Heidi; his daughters, Victoria and Caroline; his sister, Yea-Mei Mary Smith Sauer; and his brother, William Joseph Smith, Jr.
