Son of John Ramsey Sr. and Mary Black.

Served as a Sgt. in the 13th Virginia Regiment during the American Revolutionary War.

In 1784 Alexander sold his land in Virginia to his brother William and joined a band of pioneers (some 200) and traveled the Wilderness Trail through the Cumberland Gap into what would later become Fayette County, Kentucky. They settled on Big Stone Creek in what was to become Clark Co., KY. Alexander had married Mary (possibly Steele) while in Virginia and they had 7 children. Alexander Jr., John, William, Andrew, James, Sarah and Mary. By 1805, Alexander had acquired 600 acres of land and established the Sugar Ridge Presbyterian Church and graveyard on the Big Stone Creek.
