Prominent Oregon pioneer. A member of the Peoria Party he arrived at Fort Vancouver on June 1, 1840 accompanied by Francis Fletcher, Amos Cook, and Ralph Kilbourne. The crossing from Illinois to Oregon took 13 months. Holman was a coopper by trade and while wintering at Brown's Hole he made saddles and rifle stocks to trade for supplies.
He was one of the "Men of Champoeg" who voted to form Oregon's first provisional government in 1843. Holman was a prominent merchant and flax seed farmer in Salem. He served on the first board of Trustees for Willamette University. He married Almira Phelps in 1841 and, after her passing, he married Libbie Buss in 1875.
