Elder John D. Hightshoe, the subject of this sketch, was born in Ohio, April 14, 1825; died at the old home in Clark County, February 12, 1912. He moved from Ohio to Indianapolis when 7 years old and to Clark County to near the home where he died in 1867.
He was married to Harriet Wilkens January 9, 1853 (Hendricks County, Indiana),to whom were born 10 children, 6 of them having preceded the father in death. He united with the Methodist Church in 1855. He became a licensed exhorter in 1861. He united with the Baptist Church at Mill Creek and was ordained into the ministry about 25 years ago. While limited in education, he was a deep thinker and a great bible student. He was one of the pioneer preachers of the county, going from place to place, and receiving but little compensation for his services. Mt.
