James and Jedidah Gorham were early settlers of Liverpool in Nova Scotia. Because they were financially very well off (James Gorham had made his fortune on the seas as a merchant and trader) and were childless, they were able to make generous contributions to their community. Because they were patrons of education, the congregational church and the temperance movement (abstaining from alcohol), they concentrated their attention and contributions in these areas. The result was improvements in Liverpool and in the welfare of its people.
With support and financial assistance from the Gorhams, the first public school was constructed in 1812, the Gorham College was founded, and Liverpool's Temperance Hall was built in the 1830's.
