Note: Sarah's YOB on the Bennett/Young monument (which has numerous errors) is incorrect. 1821/22 appears on all census records. Full date is from ancestral sources.

Daughter of Margaret Ennis & John Reser. She married Elias Bennett in the late 1830's in Chemung Co., NY. The couple had three children there (Lovier, Melvina & Charles) before moving to Kane Co., IL around 1843/44, settling in Plato on 160 acres where their last children were born.

The 1850 Plato census shows "Eleas" & Sarah with their oldest five children, but is plagued with errors: Lovina (actually Lovier, a son) is listed as female & Malvern (actually Malvina, a daughter) is listed as male. The 1860 Plato census shows Elias & Sarah with nine children: Laben (actually Lovier), Malvina, Charles, Mary J, John, Eveline, Miles, Lueller (actually Llewellyn) & Luona (actually Louana). Malvina is incorrectly listed as a Bennett in that census but was actually already married to Cyrus Alvord & was expecting their first child, perhaps why she was with her mother. In both census Charles is listed as being born in New York, as are later census records but his bio in the Portrait & Biographical Record of Southeastern Kansas lists Plato, IL as his place of birth. (That same bio says his family moved to Kane Co., IL in 1833, clearly incorrect & that his maternal grandfather's name was Joseph).

When the Civil War broke out her husband & her two oldest sons enlisted with the Union. Her husband Elias (born c. 1817 in Chemung Co., NY) enlisted in 1862 with the 5th Illinois Heavy Artillery (in Elgin, IL). He contracted a disease due to exposure & the long marches & died in January of 1863 in Knoxville, Tennessee (no FAG memorial). Both of her sons survived the war. Lovier enlisted as a Private with Co. K of the 52nd Illinois Infantry, attain the rank of Sergeant. Her son Charles also enlisted as a Private with Co. K of the 52nd Illinois Infantry, attaining the rank of Captain. Wounded at the Battle of Shiloh, he reenlisted with Co. A of the 141st Illinois Infantry.

Sarah applied to the military for a widow's pension and was awarded $8 per month. She also received $2 per month for each of her three young children which was discontinued when they reached their 16th birthday.

In 1870 (Plato, IL), widowed Sarah was the head of the household which included John, Llewellyn, Luania (Louana) and youngest son Frank. Son Miles (see link) is not shown, making his death more likely to be 1861 rather than 1871. (Note: The bios of her son's Charles & John both list her as the mother of nine instead of ten). Sarah's widowed mother Margaret Reser was also living with them & a William Moon (1855/56) who was probably daughter Eviine née Reser Young's nephew (William being the son of Susannah née Youngs & Martin V Moon). In 1880 Sarah is on the Neosho Co, Kansas census, staying with her son Charles & his family.

Sarah's death date used on this memorial is taken from Illinois death records. (The bio of her son Charles gives a death date of December 12th, 1891, Chicago).

Of the children of Sarah Reser & Elias Bennett:
1). Lovier (24 April 1838 NY- 1 Nov 1923 OR, #31815708) m. Clara L Cornick (or Cormick) on September 12th, 1860, Kane Co., IL. Lovier's name is mangled in every census: 1870 IA "Levier", 1880 KS "Sovier", 1900 KS "Louies", 1910 OR "Lovere". The couple had (at least) five children. Lovier was a farmer in Illinois & Iowa but later worked as a bridge carpenter for the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad.
2). Malvina (Cyrus James) Alvord (10 April 1840 NY- 13 Nov 1874 MO, #129977676) was married on December 31st, 1857. The couple moved to Niagara Co., NY but had returned to Burlington, Illinois by 1870 & moved on to Macon Co., MO before her death in 1874. The couple had (at least) six children. Cyrus' obituary listed him as the father of nine (eight girls & one boy) but as he remarried (to Elizabeth Winfield) it's unclear how many were Malvina's.
3). Charles W (8 Nov 1843-1897 KS, #28113904) m. Sarah J Clark on February 14th, 1865, Kane Co., IL. The couple had six children. Charles was the Sheriff for Neosho County, Kansas & has a bio in the Portrait & Biographical Record of Southeastern Kansas.
4). Mary Jane (John W) Spitzer (Feb 1847- ?, at least 1910 Denver, CO) was married on March 31st, 1868. The 1900 census listed her as the mother of 10 (6 still living.
5). John W (2 July 1849- ?) married Clara M Warren (who died in Kansas on February 19th, 1892) on March 14th, 1875, Newaygo Co., MI. The couple had three daughters. John was the Sheriff for Labette County, Kansas & has a bio in the Portrait & Biographiical Record of Southeastern Kansas.
