The Feather Religion was a revitalization movement of the Pacific Northwest. It drew on elements of both the earlier Indian Shaker Religion and the Waashat Religion. The religion was founded in 1904 by Jake Hunt a Klickitat shaman. It is also referred to as the Feather Dance or the Spinning Religion. Hunt was residing in Hood River , Oregon when his 3rd wife and son became ill with tuberculous. On the basis of curative powers reputedly associated with the religion, Shakers were invited to come down the Columbia River from the Yakama Reservation. Although resistant to Shakirism, Jake Hunt allowed himself to be converted in the hopes of saving his beloved wife and child. The child died several weeks later. The group surrounded the open grave, praying, as Jake Hunt mourned for his son, a niece (speakings of it may have been his daughter)of Jake Hunts had a vision, receiving a bright disk of light, like a circular mirror reflecting the sun's rays. Jake Hunt took the disk in his own hands and saw a vision of Lishwailait, on the disk dressed in buckskins holding a tambourine hand drum in the left hand and the drumstick in his right hand. He started to shake violently , seized something in his upraised hands and began to spin rapidly in place. He then announced that he had received Lishwailaits soul ( Du Bois 1938: 22-23). In spite of further ministries by the Shakers, Hunts wife died within one month. While the Shakers were still in the home, a sister of Hunts had a spell and began to spin. In deep mourning Jake Hunt lay on his wife grave, fell asleep and dreamed he saw his wife and child telling him to cease grieving . He also heard the voices of his ancestors while dreaming and was given instructions to make a hand drum and a disk of light, and was then commanded to create the Feather Religion in order to heal the sick, to cure drunkards and to convert people in the 7 lands. He was also given a new name "Titcham Nashat" or Earth Thunderer, in honor of the bright disk of light that symbolized the earth (tiicam)
Jake Hunt built a ceremonial longhouse in Husum and with his four sisters spread word of new faith. He gained converts from numerous tribes and built a longhouse among them at Spearfish on the Columbia. Jake Hunt also spent time on the Umatilla Reservation in Oregon, where the Interior Departments Office of Indian Affairs (renamed Bureau Of Indian Affairs 1947) became aware of his practices and suppressed them, ordering him to destroy his sacred objects and cut his hair. But he continued to promote his beliefs until his death in 1912.(1913)
