Grady S. Bowen, of South Knoxville, passed away in his home Tuesday, August 16, 2016. Grady was a graduate of the 1940 class of Honea Path, SC, and the University of Wisconsin, class of 1950. He was a World War II veteran who served in the US Airforce. Grady retired as Vice President of Valley Fidelity Bank and Trust Company. He had a varied career in homebuilding and mortgage financing, he developed and built a housing project in Kingston, TN, along with Bill Baskerville, of Knoxville. He also developed some of the first new homes in Oak Ridge, in the east drive area, as well as others areas in Knoxville. He was regional loan appraiser for several years with Prudential Insurance Company, real estate, and investment division for the East Tennessee area. Grady was a member of First Baptist Church of Knoxville since 1959, serving as deacon, Sunday school superintendent, and teacher.He was a member of the Gideon's International Knoxville Camp and served as speaker in churches in the Knoxville area. He was associate chaplain in the Knox County Jail, ministering to inmates. He was co-superintendent of enlargement, director of Extension Ministries, teaching Sunday school classes at Market Street Mission and the Old Kingston Pike Nursing Home. Grady served a period of time as board member, and later as President of the Knoxville Area Urban League. He was a strong believer in Missions and Evangelistic organizations and gave them his support.

Preceding Grady in death was his devoted wife of 52 years, Natalie, of Spring Green, Wisconsin; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claudius B. Bowen, of Belton, SC.; brothers, Winfred of Honea Path, SC, Ulysses, of Ocala, FL, and Rex, of Harrisburg, NC; sister, Argyle Leary Hudson, of Greenwood SC. Survived by his wife, Jane Henry Bowen; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Lynn Edmonds Bowen, of Maryville, TN; sons, Mark and Timothy Bowen, of Knoxville, TN; grandson, Tyler and wife, Kandace Rimmer Bowen; granddaughter, Morgan Bowen, of Maryville, TN; special niece, Diane Leary, of Greenwood, SC; and several nieces and nephews from North Carolina, South Carolina, Wisconsin, and Florida.

Memorials may be made to Puerto Rico Deaf Ministries and to the Gideon's International of Knoxville, 810 State Street, Knoxville, TN 37920. The family will receive friends, Sunday, August 21, 2016, from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church Sanctuary, with a funeral service to follow at 3:00 p.m. Family and friends will meet Tuesday, August 23, 2016, at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, on Lyons View Pike for a 9:30 a.m. graveside service.
