Joan Beck Marrott John
1934 - 2016

Joan Beck Marrott John, age 81 of Perry, Utah, passed away August 20, 2016.

She was born October 28, 1934, in Logan, Utah, to Lester and Margaret Robbins Beck, the oldest of four children. Her family later moved to Springville, Utah when she was about four years of age. She attended local schools there and graduated from LDS seminary and Springville High School.

One of her first jobs was as a telephone switchboard operator. She married J. Kay Marrott August 2, 1954, and together they had seven children. She and Kay bought a farm in Mapleton, Utah, where they raised their children, apples, lots of vegetables, raspberries and a variety of animals. They were later divorced.

Joan was married to Rodney T. John on June 11, 1988, and on Valentine's Day in 1990, they were sealed in the Jordan River Temple. At that time, they bought a home in Highland, Utah, where they lived for 26 years. They built their property into a place they loved, and where they raised peaches in a small orchard, had large vegetable and flower gardens and a woodshop where Rod enjoyed cabinetmaking and other woodworking projects. Joan's declining health suggested simplifying their lives, and they moved into a condo in Perry, Utah, in November of 2014.

Joan had taught piano lessons to many children in Mapleton and continued to teach neighborhood children in Highland. She was an Avon Lady for nine years at the prestigious President's Club level, and received many awards for her work. Later, she became a very successful insurance agent, working mostly in the local school districts and selling for AFLAC Insurance Co.

Among her callings as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joan played the piano for Primary and Relief Society and also served in the presidencies of both organizations; but her greatest love was to teach "cute, little, wiggly" 11 year old Boy Scouts. She loved little boys, and teaching Scouting was so fun to her that she taught Scouting for 18 years while in Mapleton.

Joan served with Rod while he was a branch president at the Provo Missionary Training Center and for several years with him in the family home evening program at the Utah State Prison. From 2000 to 2002 they served together as senior missionaries in Croatia, and in these callings created many pleasant memories. They enjoyed travel, including cruises and visited many parts of the world including Russia and Scandinavia, South America, Alaska, Mexico, England, Hawaii and the South Pacific Islands.

Joan was a "people person"; she had a great laugh, loved people and could strike up a conversation with a total stranger almost anytime and anywhere. She enjoyed oil painting, her flower gardens and genealogy. She loved talking about her grandmother's farm in North Logan and painted a picture of the family home there. She dearly loved her Robbins family cousins and often attended their family reunions at Bear Lake. She had a strong, determined personality, and her courage helped her to continue through difficult times.

Joan is survived by her husband Rodney T. John, her brother Jerry Beck, her sister Judy Lewis and her five children, Karen Christensen, Merri Ann Marrott, Sally Marrott, Monte Marrott and Kathryn Marrott; twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jay and her sons Scott and Quinn.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at 12:00 Noon at Gillies Funeral Chapel, 634 East 200 South, Brigham City, Utah. A viewing will be held on Thursday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the funeral chapel. Interment will be in the Portage Cemetery.
