Gedney House (1665), 21 High Street
The Gedney House is a mid-17th centry house that has survived nearly 400 years despite significat changes to its surrounding urban landscape. It was built in 1665 by Eleazor Gedney, a prominent Salem shipwright who was related to John Turner, the builder of the House of the Seven Gables. Originally, the house had the central chimney, oblong shape, and peaked gables of First Period architecture, but like many 17th century homes, it was added to in the 18th and 19th centuries. Salem shipwright Eleazer Gedney built the earliest portion of the Gedney House in 1665. Originally, the house was an asymmetrical composition consisting of two rooms on the first floor, a single chamber above, and an attic with a front-facing gable and an attached parlor with lean-to roof. The well-crafted and sophisticated timber framed house—complete with binding and bridging summer beams, a large number of connecting joints, and interior finish trim—attests to the wealth and social standing of the home's builder and first owner. The house is oriented to the east and originally over looked Ruck's Creek and the South River (the present municipal parking lot at the end of the street), where Gedney had a wharf and shipyard.

The Gedney House is owned by the Historic New England.
