Sergeant Joseph W. Drennan, DSN 0540, was originally hired by the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department as a civilian clerk grade number 3 on 11/26/1947. He worked in the Secret Service Division. This division is now referred to as the Intelligence Division and works directly for the Chief of Police at headquarters. On 07/16/1948 he received an upgrade to clerk grade 2. Sergeant Drennan received his commission to the department on 07/18/1949. After completion of the academy Sergeant Drennan's 1St uniformed assignment was the in the 11Th District on 10/10/1949. Sergeant Drennan subsequently served in the 9th District. At or around 12/20/1964 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant of Police. In this capacity he served as a Line Platoon Supervisor in the 5Th and 4Th District's, followed by two assignments in specialized units. Those units were the Field Inspection & Evaluation, and the Bureau of Administration. When Sergeant Drennan retired on 07/05/1982 he had completed 34.61 years of faithful and dedicated service to the department. Sergeant Drennan was a 2Nd generation police officer from his family to serve on the Saint Louis Police Department. It should be noted that Sergeant Drennan's son Patrick Drennan, DSN 2851, followed in his father's footsteps and joined the ranks of the Saint Louis Police and now serves in the Intelligence Division just as his father did. Sergeant Drennan was a veteran of the United States Army and served during World War II ans attained the rank of Private.

It is with great sadness that the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department announces the passing of retired Sgt. Joseph W. Drennan, DSN 0540; the son of late SLMPD Officer Thomas P. and Emily (nee Neubert) Drennan, and father of Intelligence Detective Patrick J. Drennan, DSN 2851.

There will be no visitation or funeral; however, A memorial mass will be held on Friday May 29th, 2015 at 11:00 AM
