ALLAGASH and FORT KENT-- Ruth (Goodbou) O'Leary, 80, died Dec. 20, 2008, at a Fort Kent hospital. She was born Sept. 21, 1928, in Allagash, the daughter of Rosaire and Sally (Kelly) Goodbou.

Ruth was raised and spent most of her life in Allagash, where she raised six children with her husband of 42 years, Calvin "Cal." Ruth was a very down to earth person. She loved the simple things in life, and her family was the center of her world. She worked for North Maine Woods as a receptionist for 32 years, and retired only after her health would no longer allow her to work. She was always in the kitchen cooking and if you happened to stop in, she would always expect to share a meal with you. She made fabulous breads and pastries. She loved to knit and kept all her grandchildren in hats and mittens in the winter.

Ruth had a great love for canning and gardening. Giving her pickles and relishes to her friends was a great joy of hers. During the long winters she and her best friends, Ester May Pelletier and Mary Hafford, played bingo many times a week, there was never a dull moment when those three got together. Ruth loved to sing and could play many instruments; her bedroom was always full of guitars, keyboards and tambourines, where she could play and record music, some of which she wrote herself.

Ruth had a wicked sense of humor, she always had a witty remark or a little quote for any situation to lighten it up or to make someone laugh. She was set in her ways, and she was never one to mince words. One always knew exactly where they stood in her world. In Allagash, we call that "Kelly Blood."

The last four years of her life she lived with her daughter and her husband, Connie and Mike Deschaine, in Fort Kent, due to health issues, and she filled her days with "helping" out around the house, and taking care of her favorite cat, Opal and visits from her youngest great-grandson, Benjamin.

Ruth will be greatly missed by her surviving family and friends. She is survived by her children, Dale O'Leary and his wife, Daphne, of Blaine, Greg O'Leary and his wife, Hui Cha, of Las Vegas, Beatrice Gardner and special friend, Brian, of Westbrook, Galen O'Leary and his wife, Brenda, of St. Augustine, Fla., Caroline "Kadi" O'Leary and her special friend, Frank, of Fort Kent and Connie and her husband, Michael, of Fort Kent; three sisters, Ida Jandreau and her husband, Lucien, of St. Francis, Nada Dubray and her husband, John, of Kent, Conn., and Joanne Cyr and her husband, Robert, of Tennessee; one brother, Leonard Goodbou and his wife, Arline, of New Milford, Conn.; three sisters-in-law, Faye O'Leary Hafford, Albertine O'Leary and Gladys O'Leary, all of Allagash; 16 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Calvin in 1990; two brothers, Romeo and Joseph Goodbou; and one sister, Helen Goodbou.

In keeping with the wish of the family, there will be no viewing or church services. A graveside service will be held in the spring. Date and time of the graveside service will be announced in the Bangor Daily News and St. John Valley Times in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Autism Speaks, 5455 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 2250, Los Angeles, CA 90036. Arrangements are a service of Daigle & Nadeau Funeral Home, Fort Kent.
