Obituary for Thomas Jefferson Bailey 1939

"This community was shocked and saddened when the message came that Thomas Jefferson Bailey had dropped dead in Dunwoody, Ga., where he had gone to visit his daughter and family, Mr. & Mrs. Turney Adkins, and son and family, Edgar Bailey.

He was the son of the late Booker and Jane Bailey of Lawrence Co., being born on Jan. 17, 1860, passing away on Sept. 5, 1939, being 79 yrs., 7 mo. and 18 days of age. Also brother of Pat, Lee, Ben and Lush Bailey, all passed on to await the coming of their loved ones.

He married Miss Margaret Ellen Stacy, who proceeded him in death 33 years ago. To this union were born 12 children, six boys and six girls, two infants passing away and 1 son, William Clarence, or better known as Bud, passed away in 1918, having reached his 37th. year.

The surviving children are Mrs. Mary Greene of Nashville, Mrs. Lillie Kobeck, Jack and Edgar Bailey of Chapin, SC, Tommie Bailey of Sun Cook, NH, Mrs. Edna Crews of Columbia, Tn and Mrs. Janie Adkins of Dunwoody, Ga. Also 1 sister, Mrs. Alice Hagan, survives, also 47 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 1 great, great, grandchild. He was a member of the Church of Christ, having been baptized by Bro. King over 20 years ago, living a Christian life until the end.

His passing was sudden and a shock to every one, as he was not sick at all, he having told members of his family he was feeling fine on the morning of his death.

Bro. Sherman conducted funeral services, assisted by Bro. Teddy Crews of Lawrenceburg. Freemon & Co. being the undertakers.

The life he lived speaks for itself, as he was a friend to everyone, always ready and willing to render aid and assistance when necessary.
All the surviving children were present at the funeral except Leslie and Tommie, who were unable to get here.

Bro. Kelly mentioned in his service of Uncle Tom, as he was familiarly called by most every one, asking him if there was anything else he could do to go to Heaven that he had not done. If there was, he wanted to know what it was so he could go to rest when the summons came.

His passing is mourned and regretted by every one, but he has only gone to be with his loved ones on the other side and await the coming of his loved ones here and await the resurrection.

'We hold it true, what e'er befall,
We feel it when we sorrow most,
'Tis better to have loved and lost,
Than never to have loved at all.' "
