He was a veteran of the Civil war, a retired New York Central machinist. He was a member of the lodge of Odd Fellows and also a member of Baugo grange.
Mr Bentz was born in New York City on December 15, 1841. With his parents he moved to Laporte in his early youth.
He entered the Union service in Co E 73 Indiana Infantry, in which he served three years.
After the war he returned to Laporte where he entered the employ of the Lake Shore railroad, coming to Elkhart in 1871 with the shops. He was retired six years ago.
Mr Bentz 53 years ago married Jane Barnes, who survives him.
There are also a son, Fred Bentz, of Elkhart; two daughters, Mrs U G Ward of Oak Park, Ill and Mrs W E Crawford of Elkhart, Ind; two brothers Joseph Bentz of Laporte and Conrad Bentz of Seattle, Wash and a sister, Mrs Catherine Snyder, of Elkhart.
