Sgt. Yevgeniy Ryndych of Brooklyn, New York joined the Army on Oct. 6, 2001, right after the 9-11 attacks on the World Trade Center. He was on his second tour in Iraq and had recently proposed to his girlfriend over the phone from Iraq within the past month and bought an engagement ring over the Internet, and she received it the same day the news of his death came. He moved with his family from Kiev, Ukraine in 1998 and attended high school at Lafayette, though the precocious teen wasn't challenged by the curriculum. He found the American high school too easy. He often sat home the whole day and read books. He joined the Army because it had always been his ambition. Following his first tour, which ended in 2005, he was reassigned to a special forces unit and he volunteered for a second tour in Iraq because his old unit was once again being deployed. He was 24.
